PROGRAMMING

Picture
Rocklands Centre runs mid-week programmes for school groups.  We use the experiential learning approach, believing that active involvement in an experience, together with debriefing, is an excellent way to learn and grow. Our facilitators are part of the Solid Ground Internship Programme.  They are all trained in First Aid, Belaying and Extreme Life facilitation.  Throughout the activities that we do campers are encouraged to grow and change, and to relate their camp experiences to everyday life.

Rocklands Centre offers two programming options:  full programming and pay-per-session.  In Full Programming the Solid Ground team runs the programme for the day.  The programme would be designed to meet your group’s requirements. Each day comprises of three sessions:  morning (3 hours), afternoon (3 hours) and evening (2 hours).  At least one choice activity is included per day.

Choice activities are those activities that require extra supervision, or use specialised equipment.

Climbing Wall:  Rocklands Centre has an 8m high indoor climbing wall.  Campers choose their own goal for the wall, whether it is reaching the top of the wall, or putting on a harness and helmet.  Setting personal goals for the wall is then extended to setting personal goals in life.  There is a great sense of achievement when personal goals are achieved.  It is possible to have four lines up at once.  All equipment is provided.

Archery:  All equipment and training is provided.  The archery target is used as a metaphor for goals in life.  Campers need to deal with disappointment when at first they do not succeed.  However, the disappointment is short-lived as they realize that with practice reaching a goal becomes possible! The need for discipline and perseverance in life is emphasised.

Drumming:  Using djembe drums and other percussion instruments, campers are taught to create rhythms and beats.  Working together and following instructions are very important in this activity.

Snorkeling:  Campers will have the opportunity to look and breathe underwater in the safety of a closed water environment.  Basic skills like mask and snorkel clearing are taught.  Campers use their skills to retrieve objects and play snorkeling games in the pool.  Individual growth, self-control and conquering fears of confined spaces are key learning areas. This is also a good introduction to the underwater world.

Craft Session:  This is a relaxing activity, which usually lasts about 1 hour.  Campers are taught a craft, and then have the opportunity to make their own item.

We offer a variety of low-level activities. The entire objective of low level activities is geared towards team building, communication, working together, problem solving and leadership development.  They are also fun!

Initiatives Course:  This is an area built from tyres, poles, cables and ropes on the Rocklands campsite. Large groups are broken into small ones of 10-17 people. There are a number of different stations on the course that challenge teams in various ways.  As there are a range of activities, many different debriefing points can be brought up. Communication and leadership development are two key debriefing areas on the course.

Small group challenges:  These activities are similar to the Initiatives Course, in that they are also small group activities. However, as they are moveable they can be played in various venues around the site.  Some activities are physically demanding, while others require concentration and critical thinking skills.  All of them develop communication and team process skills.

Giant Foosball:  The Sports Hall is converted into a foosball table, with campers being the foosball players.  Being limited in movement and sharing a pole with other players means that campers will develop patience, trust and communication skills.  24 – 36 players.

Search and Recovery:  Using pictures taken from around the site, campers need to work together to find Braille clues or wildlife information.  Teams need to deal with frustration when they cannot find the clues, and need to persevere in order to complete the task.

Giant Cluedo:  Campers race around the entire site in order to solve the murder mystery.  This game can be adapted to be played over the whole site or the adventure centre only.  It is usually played at night.  This activity develops problem solving and perseverance skills.

Raft Building:  This is a 1 hour activity that utilizes the main pool. Groups have to assemble rafts from equipment provided and navigate across the pool.  Rafts can be judged using various criteria, such as appearance/quality/speed of completion/teamwork/floatability.  Leadership and teamwork skills are developed in this activity.

Beach:  There are two beaches within walking distance of Rocklands Centre, Fisherman’s Beach and Windmill.  A beach trip will take an entire morning or afternoon session.  Activities at the beach could include sand art, swimming, exploring the rock pools and playing beach games.  Beach activities can be geared towards having fun and enjoying the beach, or towards team development.  This activity is also a great way to get to know the environment.

Night Hike:  This is an opportunity for campers to experience the views across False Bay, and deal with the perceived danger of walking on the mountain at night.  All hikes are accompanied by at least three facilitators.  Torches are necessary.  Facilitators can share information about the wildlife, local history and night sky.  This activity lasts approximately 1 hour.  There are two route options – a longer and shorter one.

EarthShaker:  This is an optional activity that is run during free time whenever we do full programming.  It is a time of praising God in song and hearing from God’s word.

When we do full programming we do a selection of the above activities, as well as traditional camp games such
as Capture the Flag and Towel Volleyball, and sports such as indoor soccer and basketball.
